S1E9 - Beck - Odelay

Featuring Jen Freymond and Micah Shelton

We loaded up a shotgun full of words and sounds and fired them at The Wizard of Oz. That shotgun of words is named Beck and the ammunition is the album Odelay. We talk about a lot of 90s shit but also a lot about the various dicks in Disney films. Whoops.

This episode goes all over the place. Am I losing my mind or is it just Beck?

S1E8 - Backstreet Boys - Backstreet Boys

Featuring Erin King

Were you team Backstreet Boys or N'Sync? Both Erin and I are team Backstreet Boys, and so that's who we're talking about today!

We talk a lot about the titular boys, but also other boys named New Kids on the Block. We talk about fan-fiction (again), we Google "Wizard of Oz, but sexy." We cast a remake. I explain what a key change is because boy bands fucking love them. We talk about long held grudges against Ray Bolger. We kind of go all over the place... oh, and eventually we do talk about how this album might sync up to The Wizard of Oz.

S1E7 - System of a Down - Toxicity

Featuring Mike Olson

We get a little political because we're talking System of a Down and you can't not talk politics with System of a Down. How does the driving music sync up to a beautiful film with slow pacing? Mike has some interesting takes. Meanwhile I have some thoughts about Dorothy and her college courseload (namely her sociology 101 class). I also learn that a song is about Charles Manson and another song is about group sex. I did not know these things. If you didn't know, now you know.

S1E6 - Florence + the Machine - Lungs

Featuring Elizabeth Nordenholdt

Things are finally getting really weird as I think this is the first time we talk less about syncing things up and more about other random stuff. We talk about the problems in Hollywood in 1939, Elizabeth yells at tornadoes for a bit, and we somehow make a return to They Might Be Giants. All in all, it was a pretty successful adventure.

S1E5 - Weird Al Yankovic - Running With Scissors

Featuring Mike Snider

This week we are infused with pure polka power as we talk about Weird Al Yankovic's album Running With Scissors. Mike banks his entire premise on syncing up the song Albuquerque, but will it pay off? We also come up with a good theory about how witches are just hackers. It all makes sense if you think about it.

Mike tells a story about his wife's interaction with Weird Al.

S1E4 - David Bowie - Blackstar

Featuring Tara Johnson

I wasn't at all familiar with any of David Bowie's work beyond "Space Oddity" and "Ziggy Stardust." Tara set me straight as she picks David Bowie's final album, a strange and experimental album full of some soulful saxophone and deep symbolsim.

Compared to a lot of the upbeat and poppy music we've listened to before, this gets downright ethereal. But how will it hold up synced to The Wizard of Oz?

S1E3 - Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Featuring James Anderson

Today I'm joined by James Anderson of the podcast Unabashedly Obsessed! This is the first album that I wasn't familiar with, and I learned some things about Elton John. We ponder about why a Brit writes sings so much about nostalgia for Americana. We also consider maybe some motivic instrumenation for different characters. We talk about how much we hate "If I Were King of the Forest" and I talk about my current feelings about The Wizard of Oz 3 episodes in.

S1E2 - They Might Be Giants - Apollo 18

Featuring Victoria Watkins and Bill Rahn

I'm joined by Victoria Watkins of Magic Folk and Bill Rahn of These Are Some of the Sodas We Like as we talk about how They Might Be Giants is all our jam. Is They Might Be Giants going to be a better soundtrack than Barenaked Ladies? We also talk about our love of the accordion (Victoria even plays!) and the time Bill met one of the Johns.

S1E1 - Barenaked Ladies - Stunt

Featuring Temma Clark-Braverman

Ben is joined by Friend of the Podcast Temma as we discuss the album Stunt, by Barenaked Ladies. As the pilot episode, we are somewhat more analytical take than the later episodes. We talk about what makes Barenaked Ladies great and the fact that this album is an awful lot about dreams.
